　　「企業家誓言」出自於美國獨立戰爭期間的「常識」一書，作者托馬斯．潘恩用樸素的文字激勵人們反抗暴政和奴役，北美獨立戰爭戰爭期間「常識」一書對人們的影響力僅次於「聖經」。

　　1904年，美國「企業家」雜誌選用「常識」中的一段話，作為發刊詞，此後百餘年中，滄海桑田，物是人非，但雜誌扉頁上的這段話，卻從來沒有改變。可比醫界之《希波克拉底誓言》 ，它被稱為《企業家誓言》：

中文翻譯：

我是不會選擇做一個普通人的。
如果我能夠做到的話，我有權成為一位不尋常的人。
我尋找機會，但我不尋求安穩，
我不希望在國家的照顧下成為一名有保障的國民，那將被人瞧不起而使我感到痛苦不堪。

我要做有意義的冒險。
我要夢想，我要創造，我要失敗，我也要成功。

我拒絕用刺激來換取施捨;
我寧願向生活挑戰，而不願過有保證的生活;
寧願要達到目的時的激動，而不願要烏托邦式毫無生氣的平靜。

我不會拿我的自由與慈善作交易，也不會拿我的尊嚴去與發給乞丐的食物作交易。
我決不會在任何一位大師面前發抖，也不會為任何恐嚇所屈服。

我的天性是挺胸直立，驕傲而無所畏懼。
我勇敢地面對這個世界，自豪地說：在上帝的幫助下，我已經做到了。

I do not choose to be a common person.
It is my right to be uncommon—if I can.
I seek opportunity—not security.
I do not wish to be a kept citizen,
humbled and dulled by having the state look after me.
I want to take the calculated risk,
to dream and to build,
to fail and to succeed.
I refuse to barter incentive for a dole;
I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence;
the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of Utopia.
